As we end our journey exploring the fire of God, this week we will focus on the dangers of a lukewarm church; a church that is not on fire.
In Revelations 3:16-17 in the Apostle John’s vision of Jesus, the Lord Jesus expressed His disapproval of lukewarmness, addressing the church of Laodecia with these words:
16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
We are called to be fervent and continually burn for God, but churches can be lukewarm, which is extremely dangerous. History has demonstrated what the Scriptures show about the dangers of a lukewarm church. In reality a lukewarm church is a church that has become spiritually useless and lost its fire. What does it mean to be a lukewarm church?
A lukewarm church:
- loses ground in evangelism
- will preach a lukewarm Gospel
- loses intimacy with God
- will capitulate to the culture
