How to accomplish your goals when no one is cheering you on.

Do you know that most people expect their lives to amount to something? We all have this sense that life should go well, our goals should be met. But many people expect encouragement, approval, support and fail for want of cheerleaders. In essence they play politics with their lives, They will not take their place until voted in by popular opinion. Some of my favourite characters in the Bible are those ones who defy tradition, who challenge conventional wisdom and go against public opinion to accomplish great tasks and fulfill their destiny. Hence my liking for characters like Caleb, like the five daughters of Zelophehad, David, Paul etc.

When they do not see what you see

You see there are times when you have been prepared and anointed for something, there is a cause burning deep within you; and yet the people around you, older and younger mostly do not carry the same thing and/or simply refuse to see it. Worse, they may find your passion suspect. It could be their ignorance or it could be a demonic veil aimed at frustrating you and stifling your zeal. The devil is blinding them to your goals to hinder their accomplishment.

For a while it does not seem to matter. However, one day you come to a crossroads. You can follow your destiny, release the cry in your heart and enter the fray, alone, if need be; or you can sink back into the convenience of approval, choose not to rock the boat and remain mired in mediocrity. David came to such a day.

How David accomplished his goals

Though anointed, he had continued meekly following the sheep. In fact, when war broke out, he was sent home from the king’s court to care for the sheep while his brothers were summoned to the army. Then one day, he, who would be king, was sent to the battlefield with supplies for his brothers, and something stirred within him when he heard Goliath. The army, his brothers included, cowered in fear, he rose up in faith and decided Goliath must die. Nobody else saw it, they thought, like his older brother that he was being ridiculous, that his place was with the sheep not with the warriors; or, like Saul, that he was brave but foolhardy.

And David said ‘Is there not a cause’? That statement has always challenged me. Here is a man willing to flout conventional wisdom, tackle a problem head on and overcome. He found the situation untenable and he was the man for the job. What are you dispeased with? Will you change it or sit back and compain about it, or worse, pretend it’s okay because everyone else sees nothing wrong with it?

He stepped out without public approval. He stepped out despite the derision. But God had anointed him to be a deliverer whether or not he knew that at the time. He did know that he had been trained in the secret place and that this affront to His God could not be allowed to continue. His passion was provoked. He followed his heart cry. He defied impossibilities and he slew his giant. Then they celebrated him. Accomplishment preceeded acceptance. It will be the same for you.

Accomplish your goals – Do it without them

You also have a giant to slay. Success in every place of assignment is a choice between cowardice and courage, between compromise and daring. They may not invite you to the battle, yet you carry the grace to win it. You cannot afford to let your passion ebb away and die because no one has formed a board to support you. You will find that the test of the substance of what you carry may be in the degree of opposition you face to release it.

After all if you do not have the wherewithal to confront mockery in your own camp how will you stand the relentless pounding of the opposition? And when they mock, remember, most people do not celebrate potential, they only celebrate achievement, you will have to do it without them cheering you on. And you can. You can because you heard from heaven and you know what God has appointed you to. You may have been anointed in secret like David and even those who heard the prophetic word do not believe it. Never mind, God does and you should. Take action.

Men of passion wanted

The future of the church will be played out through men and women who have a consuming passion for God and His kingdom, one that cannot be quenched by the scorn of unrighteousness, whose flames will not be doused by the cowardly complacency of cynical older brothers and battle averse hierarchies. These are men and women who will say, as David did  ‘Is there not a cause’? They smart at the affront to the name of their God. They are enraged at the intimidation of the people of God, they hear the suffering of masses alienated from God, terrorized by the enemy of their souls. And they jump into the fray.

I believe you are positioned to be one of those, and they may not cheer you on at the starting blocks, but mark my words, they will be applauding you at the finishing line. So, slay that giant. It’s what you were made for.
