Why I preach.

This Saturday night as i sit in the presence of the Lord before service tomorrow i am deeply moved, and in fact the only reason i am writing this is to release some of the intensity of the moment; how do you weep on screen? I have always wondered, since i began to get close to God, what on earth does He see in us?

Why does He bother? No do not give me the theological answers to that, I know them, i can recite them. But aren’t there those times when despite what you know, you still are dumbfounded and confounded by what you hear, sense and see, you still are speechless and incapable of a coherent explanation?

Not surprising, after all can the Most High fit into our neat boxes? It has pleased Him in His greatness to make Himself accessible, so accessible that some will even accuse us of anthropomorphism, never mind. Yet there are those times when you are so overwhelmed by the consciousness of His Person, that you can only sit, kneel, worship and weep.

I have always felt that the primary need of a Christian is to know Him; we trifle with Him because we do not know Him, we play competition games, lust games, because we do not know Him. Paul was so captivated by this one thing, he cried out ‘that i may know Him’; after the astounding revelations, the desire remained intact, to know Him; to be putty in His hands; to be a delight in His sight.

Is that not the reason we do all this, we travel, we preach, we sing, we do church, that men may know Him, love Him and serve Him? I love the people I preach to weekly, i love the people i preach to when i travel, i love the people of this city, i want to see them all saved, healed, the works; but when i get up tomorrow morning to preach the words of this life, it will not primarily be for their benefit.

It will be to  to declare the excellencies of  Him who has called me out of darkness into His marvellous light. I will be preaching His praise, praising in preaching, declaring before heaven and earth the manifold wisdom of the One I serve, declaring before the angels, the hosts of heaven and every demon and the devil himself how utterly glorious, all knowing and magnificent is my King.

It will be because majesty cannot go unspoken, wisdom ‘unextolled’, and such ways unsung. It will be above all, to show forth His praise.

Shalom.
